We read the fabric code before anything gets wet

Almost every upholstered piece has a care tag with a cleaning code, and that code decides the method:

• W — water-based cleaning is safe; this is where extraction does its best work.
• S — solvent only; water can leave rings or shrink the fabric, so we use a different approach.
• W/S — either works; we choose based on the soil.
• X — vacuum only. We won't wet-clean it, and we'll tell you so.

Then we test a hidden spot. Linen, velvet, silk blends and natural fibers get the lightest touch, because they're the ones most likely to brown or shrink if over-wetted. Performance fabrics and microfiber usually clean up very well.

Arms, headrests and the seat you always sit in

The first places a couch darkens are the arms, the top of the back cushions and the seat that gets used most. That's body oil and skin contact, not dirt on top — which is why vacuuming and wiping don't change it. A pre-treatment that breaks down oils, then extraction, lifts it out and usually brings those areas back close to the rest of the fabric.

Pets on the couch

Pet hair, drool and dander build up in the seams and under the cushions. We remove the hair first, then clean. Fresh pet accidents usually come out with enzyme treatment; old dried urine tends to lighten a lot rather than vanish, and we'll be honest about that before we start. Everything we use is pet- and kid-safe and rinses out, so there's no residue left on the fabric.
